Why the Best Resort Pool Days Feel So Effortless

Why the Best Resort Pool Days Feel So Effortless

One of the things I love about a great resort isn't the pool.

It's the way the entire day unfolds.

You settle into a chair with a coffee. Maybe you read for a while. Eventually you wander into the water to cool off, spend some time at the swim up bar. Someone orders lunch. Conversations come and go. Before you know it, the sun is getting low and you've somehow spent eight hours outside without ever feeling rushed.

The best resorts don't make you feel busy.

They make it easy to slow down.

The more we thought about it, the more we realized that's exactly what we're trying to create at home.

It's Not About Spending More

When people picture a resort-style backyard, they often imagine expensive renovations, designer furniture and magazine-worthy landscaping.

Those things are nice, but they aren't what make a day memorable.

Think about your favorite vacation.

You probably remember who you were with, what you laughed about and how relaxed you felt far more than the color of the patio pavers.

Great pool days are built on comfort, not extravagance.

Remove the Little Frustrations

One thing resorts do exceptionally well is eliminate small inconveniences.

There's always another chair.

Shade is never far away.

Cold drinks are easy to grab.

Music blends into the background without taking over.

Nobody is constantly getting up to solve a problem.

Those little details create a feeling that's difficult to describe but easy to recognize.

You simply want to stay longer.

Give People Places to Gather

We've noticed that people naturally drift toward comfortable spaces.

Sometimes that's around the dining table. Sometimes it's a pair of Adirondack chairs. Sometimes it's standing together in the shallow end with a drink in hand.

The goal isn't to create one perfect seating area.

It's to create several comfortable places where conversations can happen naturally throughout the day.

Keep the Menu Simple

Some of the best pool days we've experienced didn't involve elaborate meals.

Fresh fruit.

Sandwiches.

Something on the grill.

Cold drinks within reach.

When the food is simple, the host spends less time in the kitchen and more time with everyone else.

That's a trade we'll make every time.

The Water Should Invite You In

For most adults, the pool isn't about swimming laps.

It's about cooling off, relaxing and spending time together.

That's one reason we designed The Drift the way we did.

We weren't trying to build the biggest float in the pool.

We wanted something that made it easy to slip into the water, settle in comfortably and stay part of the conversation.

Because most pool days aren't about drifting away.

They're about staying close to the people who matter.

The Best Days Don't Feel Scheduled

Looking back, our favorite pool days all have something in common.

Nobody was watching the clock.

People floated for a while.

Someone started another conversation.

Kids invented their own games.

Lunch turned into the afternoon, and the afternoon quietly became evening.

Those are the moments you remember.

Not because anything extraordinary happened, but because you gave yourself permission to slow down.

That's what a resort does so well.

And it's something we can all bring home.

Live the Moment.

The best part of a resort isn't the building.

It's the feeling that there's nowhere else you need to be.

If your backyard helps you create that feeling, even for one afternoon, you have already built something special.
